Welcoming the Autumn Season

Autumn announces itself in the loveliest ways. Leaves turn amber and gold, the first fire crackles in the hearth, and familiar seasonal aromas return to the kitchen. With each passing week, the anticipation of gathering with family and friends grows. Beautifully appointed tables. Treasured traditions. Laughter carrying from one room to another. Conversations lingering long after dinner.

In my family, Thanksgiving and Christmas are especially meaningful, occasions to celebrate those we love, revisit cherished traditions, and create memories that become part of our family’s story. The pleasure begins long before the celebration itself, in imagining each occasion, preparing our homes, and bringing together the details that make it distinctly ours.

I invite you to approach the coming months with intention, enjoying the preparations as much as the celebrations.

October | Simplify & Prepare

Cozy autumn living room with a crackling fireplace, a cream sofa layered with navy check, botanical, and butterfly pillows from the Wander & Weave Collection, a plaid throw, and a butterfly table runner on a wooden coffee table set with apple cider and mugs.

October welcomes us with pumpkins at the doorstep, a favorite throw draped across the sofa, freshly pressed apple cider, and the first crackling fire of the season. It’s time to envision the holidays ahead and prepare our homes and calendars for the months to come.

Begin With How You Want to Feel

Before the invitations, menus, and decorating begin, ask yourself: How do I want this holiday season to feel?

  • Joyful and spirited?
  • Peaceful and unhurried?
  • Filled with family traditions and lively celebrations?
  • Perhaps a balance of all three.

Let that vision guide your plans.

Bring gatherings, travel, entertaining dates, and professional commitments into one calendar. Send invitations early, revisit your holiday card list, and set aside time for the traditions you look forward to most.

Make Space for What Matters

Before bringing out seasonal decorations, consider how you’ll use your rooms. Walk through the entryway, living room, dining room, guest bathroom, and other gathering spaces. Notice what needs to be relocated, simplified, or rearranged to accommodate guests and seasonal activities.

Clear surfaces for decorative displays, consider furniture placement for conversation and circulation, and identify where you may need additional seating or serving space. Extend the festive vibe into personal spaces, bedrooms, bathrooms, and half-baths, and place specialty items and decorations thoughtfully. These adjustments lay the foundation for a home that functions and flows beautifully all season long.

Create a Healthier Indoor Environment

As temperatures cool and we spend more time indoors, consider the materials and natural elements that support a healthier indoor environment.

  • Welcome the aromas of autumn. Simmer orange slices, cinnamon, cloves, and cranberries for a fragrant seasonal touch. If you enjoy essential oils, a waterless diffuser offers another option. I especially love Sacred Mountain for its rich, woodsy character.
  • Select candlelight thoughtfully. Instead of petroleum-based paraffin candles and synthetic fragrances, choose 100% pure beeswax or 100% plant-based waxes, such as soy or coconut. Battery-operated LED tea lights offer a festive alternative without the need for combustion.
  • Bring nature indoors. Introduce Boston ferns, parlor palms, spider plants, or other houseplants suited to your home’s light conditions. Their foliage adds texture and a living connection to the outdoors. Choose pet-safe plants, and avoid overwatering, which can encourage mold growth.

Welcome the Beauty of Autumn

Begin with the colors, textures, and natural elements that speak to you. Perhaps it’s a palette of copper, chocolate, olive sage, and cream, complemented by sculptural branches, pinecones, and dried citrus.

Consider where a few changes will have the greatest impact. A patterned table runner, coordinating pillows in varying sizes, a generously draped throw blanket, or seasonal tea towels can introduce a fresh autumn expression without redesigning the room.

My Wander & Weave Collection celebrates the relationship between nature and design, pairing stylized butterflies and botanicals with tailored checks and stripes. Choose pieces that complement your furnishings, allowing pattern, texture, and color to form one considered composition.

Will your holiday theme reflect traditional Christmas colors, a winter-inspired palette, or a curated collection of treasured pieces? Review what you already own. Gather decorations, textiles, ornaments, and seasonal accents, keeping their colors, scale, and how they complement one another in mind.

Will your holiday theme reflect traditional Christmas colors, a winter-inspired palette, or a curated collection of treasured pieces? Review what you already own. Gather decorations, textiles, ornaments, and seasonal accents, keeping their colors, scale, and how they complement one another in mind.

Walk through your rooms and decide where each arrangement belongs. Perhaps the entryway welcomes guests with a festive display, the mantel becomes a focal point, and the dining room carries the theme through its textiles and tabletop details.
Identify what’s missing: a length of fresh greenery, coordinating ribbon, a table runner, or a few carefully selected accents to complete the composition.

My Holiday Season of Light Collection offers another way to unite your interiors through pattern. Vintage-inspired details and tailored geometry come together in Merry Berry Kisses & Holly Sprigs, Snowflakes & Vintage Ribbon, and Quatrefoil Ribbon Medallion.

From table linens and napkins to decorative accents, these designs can carry your chosen palette from one space to another.

Give Thoughtfully

Begin with the people on your gift list.

Consider their interests, favorite pastimes, and the little things they’ve mentioned throughout the year. A handcrafted treasure, beautifully illustrated book, or meaningful keepsake becomes especially memorable when you choose it with someone specific in mind.

Set your budget, note what you need to purchase or order, and allow extra time for personalized gifts. Gather wrapping materials that complement your holiday theme: beautiful papers, reusable ribbons, decorative tags, and natural embellishments.

Set aside an afternoon for holiday correspondence. Review your card list, confirm addresses, and write personal messages while you still have time to enjoy the tradition.

Share the Preparation

Schedule a day and time for family members to help with holiday preparations. Plan activities so everyone has a role, decorating the tree, hanging ornaments, wrapping gifts, or organizing seasonal decorations.

Invite children into the kitchen to prepare traditional family recipes, bake cookies, and make favorite holiday pies. These shared experiences introduce them to the flavors and customs they’ll carry forward.

If guests are contributing dishes, coordinate the menu in advance so everything complements the occasion. The preparations become part of the celebration, filled with conversation, laughter, and family traditions.

Set a Table That Welcomes

Gather the tabletop pieces you’ve selected for the occasion, special-occasion china or favorite everyday dinnerware, serving pieces, stemware, and decorative elements that complement your theme.

Lay everything out to see how the colors, patterns, and materials work together. Choose a tablecloth or patterned runner as your foundation. Add coordinating placemats, cloth napkins, and stemmed glasses reserved for seasonal gatherings.

Tuck a sprig of greenery into each folded napkin and secure it with natural twine or decorative ribbon. Create a focal centerpiece, keeping it low enough for conversation across the table. Finish with handwritten place cards, candlelight, and a few carefully selected embellishments. Serve beverages from glass pitchers and carafes instead of plastic, allowing even the practical details to complement your setting.

Host With Ease

The pleasure of entertaining begins well before the first guest arrives.

In the days leading up to your celebration, prepare favorite dishes, wrap gifts, arrange serving pieces, and attend to the finishing details. A thoughtful timeline lets the day unfold without the rush of last-minute decisions.

Set the mood with festive music that reflects the occasion, lighting that complements your decorations, and the seasonal aroma of Warm Pumpkin Spice. Bring out your favorite glassware, prepare a signature seasonal cocktail or sparkling mocktail, and add a few personal touches that make the celebration distinctly yours.

When the festivities begin, move beyond the preparations and become part of the moments you’ve so lovingly brought together.
After all, the joy of hosting is not simply creating a beautiful celebration. It’s sharing in it.

December brings our holiday plans to life. Decorations are in place, gifts are gathered, and favorite family traditions are ready to enjoy.

Adding the Finishing Touches

In the days before each gathering, revisit your plans and take care of anything that remains.

  • Confirm the menu, organize ingredients, prep dishes you can make ahead, and check that gifts and holiday cards are ready.
  • Refresh seasonal greenery, complete the final decorative arrangements, and prepare the gathering spaces.
  • For a bright, celebratory aroma, I especially enjoy Christmas Spirit.

Make Time for What Matters Most

Amid the festivities, make room for the traditions and personal pleasures that give the season meaning. Plan an afternoon of holiday baking, revisit a favorite Christmas film, take a winter walk, or spend an evening enjoying the decorations you’ve arranged.

Maybe it’s morning tea beside the tree, making a cherished family recipe, or gathering everyone for an annual photo. These moments deserve a place on the calendar alongside the larger celebrations.

Preserve Your Favorite Memories

Before the season slips into a new year, capture the details you’ll want to revisit. The people gathered around your table. The recipe everyone requested. A heartfelt conversation. Unexpected laughter. A new tradition you hope to celebrate again.

My journal, A Timeless Keepsake, offers a personal place to record these family celebrations, meaningful stories, and cherished memories for generations to come.
